Frequently Asked Questions
Have questions about physical therapy, pricing, or how care works at Gym Rat Physical Therapy? Here are answers to some of the most common questions we receive.
Getting Started
Do I need a referral to start physical therapy?
No, you do not need a referral to begin physical therapy. Michigan is a direct access state, meaning you can schedule an evaluation and start treatment without seeing a physician first.
What should I expect during my first visit?
Your first visit includes a full evaluation to understand your symptoms, movement, and goals. From there, we create a personalized plan and begin treatment with any time remaining.
How long are appointments?
Appointments are one-on-one and typically last around 60 minutes, allowing for a more thorough and personalized approach to your care.
Pricing & Insurance
Do you accept insurance?
We are in-network with Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, and Medicare. If you have a different insurance provider, we also offer straightforward cash-based pricing.
What is the cost of physical therapy?
If you plan to use insurance, the cost of each visit will depend on your individual plan, including your deductible, copay, and coverage.

If you prefer a cash-based option, physical therapy visits are $120 per session.
Why choose cash-based physical therapy?
Cash-based physical therapy offers a higher level of flexibility and personalization. Because care is not limited by insurance requirements, treatment can be tailored more directly to your goals and preferences.

This means you have more control over your sessions — whether you want to focus on hands-on treatment, exercise, performance, or a combination of approaches. It also allows for greater flexibility in how time is spent during each visit.

Insurance-based care also provides effective, structured treatment, but must be focused on the specific condition and problem area being treated. In contrast, cash-based care allows for a more flexible approach. (For example, if you are recovering from an ankle injury but also want to work on upper body strength, that goal can be incorporated into your sessions when working on a cash-basis.)
Services & Treatment
What conditions do you treat?
We treat a wide range of orthopedic injuries and conditions, including knee pain, back pain, shoulder injuries, post-surgical recovery, and more.
Do you offer services outside of physical therapy?
Yes, we also offer personal training, manual therapy services such as massage, cupping, scraping, and dry needling, as well as golf-specific rehabilitation and performance training.
Can I come in just for manual therapy or recovery?
Yes. Manual therapy services are available on a cash basis and can be scheduled independently for recovery, pain relief, or general wellness.
Golf Rehabilitation & Performance
Do you work with golfers?
Yes, certified by Titleist Performance Institute, we specialize in helping golfers recover from injuries and return to the game. We also offer performance-focused programs to improve mobility, strength, and swing efficiency.
How does the golf simulator fit into treatment?
Our golf simulator allows you to swing in the clinic using your own equipment and hit real golf balls while we assess your movement, performance, and any symptoms in real time. With access to live ball and club data, we can track your progress and make adjustments during your session.
This eliminates the need to wait until your next trip to the range to see how your body is responding to therapy, allowing us to progress your rehab more efficiently and ensure you’re ready to return to the course with confidence.
Scheduling & Availability
How do I schedule an appointment?
You can schedule an appointment by calling, emailing, or texting us. We’ll respond as soon as possible during our normal business hours.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule?
We ask that you provide notice at least one calendar day prior to your appointment if you need to cancel or reschedule. As long as a time-stamped message is received by 11:59 PM the day before your appointment — whether by call, voicemail, text, or email — no cancellation fee will be applied.
Late cancellations may be subject to a $30 fee, and missed appointments without notice may result in a $60 charge.
